As adults age, a selection of health problems can arrive and derail an otherwise happy life. However, it’s not all gloom and doom. Getting ahead of the game and getting into an exercise routine now can change the course of your future. The risks of chronic diseases are increased with a mixture of inactivity and ageing, leading some to develop multiple chronic problems such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and some types of cancer due to a lack of physical activity. Between 4 to 6 pounds of muscle can be lost per decade if the person doesn’t do strength training on a regular basis. This means tasks that might seem basic now – like making yourself a meal and doing the laundry – will be far more difficult when you’re older, making you more dependent on others. If you’ve been out of the loop for a while, begin with lighter exercises before working up to a full routine. Simple balance exercises – such as standing on one foot – shouldn’t be overlooked as these will improve your mobility. Remember, it’s always easier to get into the habit of working out when you’re younger, but that doesn’t mean you can’t begin improving your body and lifestyle at any age!
